Day 4 dawned. We had a brief morning to spend in Bellingham before flying via Seattle and Portland, Oregon to Billings, Montana.
First we headed to Zuanich Point Park, alongside another docks area, which was frequented by large numbers of swallows, and this White-Crowned Sparrow, nuttali:
Alison had been telling us of the blood curdling cry of the 'Pacific Tern' but we could find no reference to such a bird in our guides. We all heard the cry at Zuarrich Point and then saw the birds - Caspian Terns, a very big bird in comparison with the terns we see in the UK:
From Zuarrich we headed back to Boulevard Park, parking topside for a quick mooch down to the shore, where we saw this Common Loon (Great Northern Diver), in summer plumage:
Finally with the time against us we headed back for the car, crossing over the bridge in time to catch the first Amtrak of the day heading below us:
We really enjoyed our brief stay in Bellingham. There are so many distinct habitats in the area we think it would prove an ideal location for a two-week birding holiday, taking in the Olympic Peninsula, the mountains and the habitat on the dry side of the state, as well as the San Juan Islands and of course Vancouver just up the way, so we're itching to get back...
